The New York Bicycling Coalition Announces Release of First Compact Disc to Highlight Regional Road Safety

NYBC released an interactive CD today that will help communities improve their roads and byways for access to cyclists and pedestrians. The compact disc was designed for planners, advocates, and government as a self-help tool kit for better planning public areas for transportation and recreation.

Directed primarily at groups who desire to make cycling and walking safer and more accessible in their communities, the CD demonstrates the steps that can be taken to initiate the process, involve comment from the community and the government, design specific areas for public use, and take a project to completion.

The New York Bicycling Coalition received funding for the project from the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. Last year the coalition was also host to a series of workshops throughout New York State aimed at assisting communities to change their bicycle and pedestrian access and safety infrastructures. The workshops brought together motorist safety organizations, such as the Automobile Association of America, planners, advocates, and government representatives in charge of highway design, such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), to create a broad awareness of non-motorist safety around the state.

The CD is an interactive compilation of the work completed at these workshops, and includes NYBC's state of the art "how to" guide for traffic calming, creating trails and walkways, road safety improvement, and road planning. It also includes diagrams of good and bad roadways and intersections, PDF downloads for educational pamphlets for children, and graphics for how to design for improved new road use. The CD includes fun, interactive clickable charts and graphics to help users understand the fundamentals of good road use.
