Governor Paterson Signs Bill A 2343 Hoyt Into Law

The new law includes bicycle and pedestrian paths within the types of construction and improvement projects of the department of transportation which are eligible for “Marchaselli funds.”  These funds can be used for the local 20% match for federal funding projects and the law specifies that such eligibility shall not be interpreted to restrict the use of other funds for the design, construction, land acquisition or other ancillary uses for bicycle paths or pedestrian paths.  NYBC has been advocating for this law for the last five years and we’re very happy to see that Governor Patterson has signed the bill into law.

Bicycle Commuting gets new attention

With high gas prices more people are using their bikes for commuting and there has been a spate of newspaper stories about it. The Boston Globe rcently published such a story that we thought nicely discussed how to get in the habit of bicycling to work. Though the story is Boston oriented, it is equally applicable to commuting in New York’s upstate and downstate cities. If you want to read it, here’s the link.
