As we near the end of 2018, the New York Bicycling Coalition has a lot to be thankful for, thanks to your generous past support. With your continuing contributions, we will build on this past year’s achievements to do even more in 2019.

2018 Appeal 723px

  •  In September, our second Annual Bike Summit, held in Saratoga Springs, drew 225 educators, advocates, state and local policy makers, and friends of cycling to create new relationships, coordinate educational efforts, and energize the cycling movement across the state. In 2019 we want to make the Bike Summit larger and even more effective.

  • For the first time, NYBC was a major presence in 2018 at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. Our booth on a main fairground pedestrian corridor was visible to tens of thousands of fair attendees each day to deliver cycling and bike safety information and messaging - and we got hundreds of them on bikes in our “pop up” two way cycle track! Our goal for 2019 is to repeat this effective State Fair presence and expand our efforts to other major events throughout the state to increase public education.

  •  In 2018, we hired four safety ambassadors who have conducted 86 trainings, presentations, and safety demonstrations at public events across the state from Buffalo to Long Island, allowing us to educate thousands of New Yorkers. Our objective for 2019 is to hire two additional seasonal safety ambassadors to provide even more on-the-ground bike and pedestrian safety education across New York State.

These three initiatives will bring the message of safe and enjoyable cycling to many thousands more New Yorkers. But that’s not all NYBC has achieved in this year, and that’s not all we plan to do next year!

In 2018 we are proud to have greatly expanded our statewide education initiatives to reach more than 100,000 New Yorkers—a significant increase from last year. For 2019 we aim to raise $30,000 in order to further expand our educational activities. But to reach our goal, we need your help.

We urgently need you to join or donate today in order to help us empower even more New Yorkers in 2019. Also keep in mind that our board will match all contributions up to the first $2,000.

Since 1990, NYBC has worked tirelessly to ensure all New Yorkers are able to safely ride a bicycle anywhere in the state. We do things for cycling in New York State that no other organization can do, and that no government or foundation money will pay for, including statewide education, tourism, and policy advocacy. Your unrestricted, tax-deductible donation will help us continue that work.

Here are a few more of the objectives we pursued in 2018 and how we plan to apply your generous donations to increase our impact in 2019:

Our “Sharing the Road” video, along with nine others which have been viewed more than 25,000 times to date, were part of the education materials developed in 2018. We also distributed more than 8,000 bicycle safety education pocket guides in English and Spanish throughout the state. In 2019, we will develop additional materials to educate motorists about the importance of sharing the road system with increasing numbers of cyclists and pedestrians.

In addition to materials for the public, we also distributed 250 thumb drives to police departments throughout the state, containing law enforcement safety education information such as our pocket guides, rack cards, and links to online quizzes. In 2019 we will continue our efforts to reach out to law enforcement officials statewide to build relationships and partner with them in educating the public.

We are proud of our Board’s leadership educating legislators and thought leaders on statewide legislation and initiatives benefiting bicyclists—demonstrated through our 3’ Safe Passing education and our e-bike legislation advocacy. In 2019, we will continue to educate as many key stakeholders as possible, in Albany and throughout the state, through meetings, petitions, op-eds, emails and letter writing, and public events concerning public policy issues that will let more New Yorkers safely bike and walk.

It’s an honor to represent and advocate for the needs of our supporters who share in our vision of empowering all New Yorkers through safe cycling education. But we can’t do it without you!
