ANNE SAVAGE,
Executive Director

Anne Savage has led the New York Bicycling Coalition since 2023, expanding the organization and invigorating our advocacy, education, and community-building efforts.

Anne brings a diverse set of skills to this work, including economic development and community planning experience with River Street Planning & Development; successful community campaigns including Friends of the Madison which successfully staved off demolition of a local theater in Albany’s Pine Hills Neighborhood; and many years as an independent consultant using her technical skills to help political and not-for-profit clients leverage technology to advance their goals.

When not working to make cycling better in New York, she coordinates the Upper Madison Street Fair - a bike-friendly annual festival of fun celebrating “City Living at its Best” in Albany and serves on the City School District of Albany Board of Education, where she advocates for equitable funding for every student in Albany and in other high-needs school districts across the state.

Anne is a cyclist, pedestrian, transit rider, and driver in Albany, where she lives with her family. She uses her bike whenever possible and other modes of transport whenever necessary!

MADELEINE JOINNIDES,
Bicycle Safety Education Grant Administrator

Madeleine Joinnides grew up surrounded by bikes and cyclists. With a background in sociology and international development, she is passionate about community safety and community development, especially meeting the needs of disadvantaged communities. She brings to the table her experience researching and writing proposals for USAID programs in clean water access, natural resource protection, and democracy and governance internationally. As Bicycle Safety Education Grant Administrator, she is excited to translate this experience to make an impact on communities close to home.

MARK HOFFACKER, 
Assistant Director of Bicycle Safety Education

Mark Hoffacker has been involved in the field of traffic safety and injury prevention for the past twenty years; at both St. Mary’s Hospital for Children and the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety. He has helped to organize two Long Island Walk/Bike Summits, has led numerous bike rodeos and parades in the downstate area and years ago, served as a VISTA volunteer in South Carolina.

ED BRENNAN, 
Assistant Director of Bicycle Safety Education

Ed Brennan is the current President of the Albany Bicycle Coalition. He has helped organize numerous group rides in the Capital Region including annual Earth Day Rides and Rides of Silence for Cyclists that Have Been Killed or Seriously Injured. He was a long-time bike commuter. He has been a network engineer and a law librarian. Since his retirement he has been able to devote more time to bike touring around the US.

DANIEL FLANZIG, 
President

Daniel Flanzig has been a board member of NYBC since 2014. He is an accomplished trial lawyer representing the rights of cyclists and pedestrians in New York. Dan is also an avid cyclist and triathlete. In addition to authoring "Wheels of Justice" an occasional column published by the Coalition, he also provides free law enforcement training to local Police Departments on e-bikes and micro-mobility laws on behalf of the Coalition. Daniel has developed free “Bike Law” classes in conjunction with Bike New York, and also serves on the Board of the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety. Daniel represents the interests of cyclists and pedestrians at the Nassau County Traffic and Safety Board and is also the Chair of the Village of Sea Cliff Traffic and Safety Committee.

CHRIS JOINNIDES,
Vice President and Treasurer

Chris Joinnides, owner of Kreb Cycle, is a proud supporter and member of the NYBC board and executive committee. He has been a USA cycling member since 1982. Chris has multiple Empire State games and State Championship medals. While at SUNY Stony Brook he rode on the ECAC Championship cycling team. He promotes and officiates about 15 road and cyclocross races a year. Chris recently passed the Level 3 Coaching exam for USA cycling. He enjoys giving new riders an opportunity to experience this great sport at work and in his time off too. Joining the board of the NYBC is just one of the many ways Chris Joinnides supports the cycling community on Long Island.

Elyse Buchman, Retired Geriatric Social Worker. Co-Proprietor, The Stony Brookside Bed & Bike Inn - Stony Brook, NY 2016 - 2024 Founded a unique bed and breakfast business, marketing towards cycling enthusiasts. Interests: Yoga, bicycle touring, photography, music, fitness.

LEAH GOLBY,
Executive Committee

Leah Golby became an advocate for people who use active forms of transportation when she stopped driving a car regularly in 2007. It didn't take long for her to realize that land use patterns worked against the most vulnerable road users. In 2009, Leah got her first new bike since she was a teenager from the local bike rescue, and became an around-town bicyclist. She served on the Albany Common Council from 2010-2017, where she ushered in the city's 2013 Complete Streets ordinance, and sponsored the city's annual "May is Bike Month" Resolution.

MARTIN BUCHMAN

Martin Buchman, Retired educator with over 25 years of experience teaching social studies and history at the high school level in both classroom and private settings. Co-Proprietor, The Stony Brookside Bed & Bike Inn - Stony Brook, NY 2016 - 2024. Founded a unique bed and breakfast business, marketing towards cycling enthusiasts. Interests: Yoga, bicycle touring, crossword puzzles, music, fitness.

CALVIN CAMPANY

Calvin Campany is a real estate agent and avid cyclist based in New York’s North Country. Since 2019, he has served as President of the Adirondack Foothills Cycling Club, helping to promote cycling, community engagement, and safe riding throughout the region. In 2024, he joined the New York Bicycle Coalition's Board of Directors.

Calvin is also the Vice President of the Tourism Board for Naturally Lewis, Lewis County’s economic and industrial development organization, where he helps promote the region’s natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and tourism opportunities.

When he’s not working, Calvin can often be found riding the scenic byways of the North Country—exploring both gravel and paved roads while keeping an eye out for cows and the occasional white-tailed deer.

RICH CONROY

Rich Conroy has been the Director of Education since starting at Bike New York in 2004. He has a masters and doctorate from University of Notre Dame, and his bike industry experience includes working for Metro Bicycles and teaching middle school kids for Recycle-A-Bicycle. In addition to being a League Cycling Instructor (LCI), he’s an LCI coach for the League of American Bicyclists and has trained numerous LCIs in the northeast and elsewhere. Rich pioneered Learn to Ride (teaching first timers how to ride a bike) as an urban bike education program, and pushed to make it part of the League's Smart Cycling Curriculum. Rich successfully pushed New York City Public Schools to start in-school/on-bike programming during the school day for middle school students.

DOUG HANEY

Doug Haney is the owner and founder of Bike Adirondacks. Before that, he worked with the Women’s Sports Foundation and U.S. Olympic Committee before (lucky for him) landing in the Adirondacks in 2001 to continue working with the Olympic movement. That experience led to 12 years in major event management and elite athlete communications with U.S. Ski and Snowboard, a career that included five Olympic Games.

In addition to BikeADK, he owns GreatRange, a marketing and communications firm dedicated to producing high quality graphics, beautiful websites and impactful marketing and messaging strategies.

He lives in Saranac Lake with his wife Kat and their two happy teens, Gwen and Liesl.

ADAM IANNI

Adam Ianni is a Buffalo-based transportation advocate and Program Director at GObike Buffalo. He leads community cycling education programs and operates a hands-on bike workshop serving thousands of Western New Yorkers each year. His work focuses on traffic safety, youth education, and expanding equitable access to cycling as a practical form of transportation. Adam is passionate about empowering individuals with the skills and confidence to navigate their communities safely. He brings a practical, community-centered perspective to advancing safe, accessible biking across New York.

DOUGLAS KELLEY

Doug Kelley is working to use bikes and bike infrastructure to enhance sustainability, community, and equity. He is a year-round bike commuter, avid road cyclist, and occasional mountain biker. His daily commute is not a grind but a joy because he's on a bike, getting exercise and sunshine. As a parent, he's seen how bikeable neighborhoods let kids learn freedom and responsibility a bit at a time. He has volunteered and supported local bike organizations, especially Reconnect Rochester, for many years. As a mechanical engineering professor, Doug has taught whole classes where every exam had a question about a bike! His scientific expertise is in fluid dynamics, which he has applied to green technologies like improved efficiency of aluminum manufacture and grid-scale energy storage.

HAL TARRY

Hal Tarry is a long time cycle tourist and a bicycle commuter. He cycled across the USA with BikeCentennial in ’76 and more recently cycled our east and west coasts. During his NYSDOT career he managed the design of numerous highway and bikeway projects and advocated for making DOT’s projects safer for cyclists. Often, small improvements made along with normal projects or by local government actions can make significant safety and convenience improvements for cyclists. Hal also recently worked with his county for 18 months developing a Vision Zero plan to eventually eliminate serious injuries and deaths from traffic crashes. Currently he is volunteering with the Trust for Public Land to bring the first section of the proposed Long Island Greenway to fruition.

DENIZ YAMAN

Deniz Yaman is the founding principal of RocSci High School in Rochester, NY, where he leads with a strong focus on community, student growth, and civic responsibility. Outside of his professional life in education, Deniz is passionate about cycling and is an active member of “Just for Giggles Cycling” in Rochester. The group rides every Monday at 6:15pm, rain or shine, exploring the beauty of Rochester by bike while building community and promoting biking awareness and safety. For Deniz, cycling is more than recreation; it’s about connection, health, and bringing people together. He is excited about expanding access to cycling opportunities and strengthening community engagement through the NYBC.

TOM KNIPE

Tom Knipe is an economic developer, planner and adjunct professor in Ithaca, NY. He co-founded Bike Walk Tompkins and the annual Streets Alive Ithaca open streets event, and formerly served as Executive Director of the Community Cycling Center and Director of Development for a successful private bike event company in Portland, Oregon. He is also an expert in tourism development and management, having served as director of the Tompkins County Tourism Program for seven years. He rides his Xtracycle cargo bike to work and enjoys exploring the Finger Lakes via road or gravel bike on the weekends and competing in the occasional trail ultra or triathlon.

Lois Chaplin retired from a career at Cornell University, where she was involved in developing and delivering educational programs for cyclists and pedestrians. Early years, found her assisting in the development of bikes on buses and a police on bikes program in collaboration with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. She was responsible for bringing awareness to the university and the greater Ithaca area of the role of bicycling and walking in a healthy environment. Her last act was developing a Complete Streets program for the Cornell Local Roads Program, reaching out to those involved with their communities throughout the state in making them healthier and more accessible to all users. She continues to keep active by riding her bike, canoeing, hiking, gardening and dancing.
