Across New York, fifty-two cyclists were killed while bike safety legislation stalled. Each bill passed one house last year. Now we need your help to get them across the finish line. Please send a message to your legislators - these changes are badly needed and long overdue!

More about the bills:

  • A3986/S2643 Stop as Yield allows cyclists to treat stop lights as stop signs, and stop signs as yields. A3986 passed the Assembly in 2023.

Allowing cyclists to enter intersections after stopping, but before the light turns green, gets them out of truck drivers’ blind spots and safely around blocked bike lanes. Allowing cyclists to yield at stop signs reduces the likelihood they’ll get hit by cross-traffic.

Eleven states have passed Stop as Yield laws. In 2022, NHTSA concluded these laws made cyclists safer.

Stop as Yield will also enhance pedestrian safety. In 2018, NYCDOT observed that red light violations by cyclists dropped 66% when allowed to enter an intersection after stopping.

  • A4346/S1724 Defined Safe Passing requires motorists outside NYC to allow at least three feet when passing pedestrians, bicyclists, and wheelchair users. S1724 passed the Senate in 2023.

Cyclists frequently have to change direction to avoid potholes, sharp objects and suddenly-opened-car-doors.  A 3’ buffer provides a much-needed margin of safety.

Forty states including NJ, PA, CT and OH have passed legislation specifying 3-4 foot buffers. Within NYS, Monroe and Suffolk Counties have local 3-foot laws. We need a uniform state bill so drivers know what to do.

Together, these bills protect cyclists while prioritizing pedestrian safety. These changes are badly needed and long overdue!
