NYBC Speaks Up for Safer, More Equitable Transportation

Right now, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is shaping several long-range plans that will influence how New Yorkers move for decades to come.  The draft 2050 Master Plan was released in June 2025, with comments due 8/11/2025.

NYBC and the NYS Safe Streets Coalition are working to ensure that the voices of everyday cyclists and pedestrians are heard loud and clear.

The 2050 Transportation Master Plan will “define a long-range statewide transportation vision and will guide policies and priorities for New York State’s transportation system with an outlook to 2050.”

We strongly support the plan’s overarching vision - “Transportation strengthens the health, safety, economic vibrancy, livability, and sustainability of communities throughout New York State.”

But vision alone isn’t enough. That’s why our latest comment letter recommends a series of clear, actionable steps NYSDOT can take to turn that vision into reality:

  1. Dedicate funding for Active Transportation infrastructure, and provide transparent reporting re: spending on Complete Streets and Active Transportation
  2. Be a voice for VRU safety in public policy discussions.
  3. Support and respect local initiatives to reduce speeds.
  4. Explicitly note Active Transportation in additional areas of the plan to avoid misunderstanding
  5. Include a goal to expand the “Safe Transportation for All” network
  6. Commit to additional Complete Streets actions
  7. Publish Crash Data in a easily usable format:
  8. Update Design Manuals and Regulations and ensure manuals focus attention on the needs of Vulnerable Road Users.
  9. Support Expanded Passenger Rail Access for Cyclists
