NYBC is in your community, and we’re offering safe cycling classes that can be tailored to your group or organization.
Our team of Safety Ambassadors is located throughout the state. These individuals are certified by the League of American Bicyclists as LCIs (league cycling instructors) and are trained to teach bike safety in a variety of circumstances and to any group of people.

Adult Programs
Introduction to Bicycle Commuting This informative 1 ½ classroom session discusses the benefits and best practices for parking the car and taking a bike to your destination. From dealing with common issues such as what to wear, how to carry cargo, and how to ride safely in traffic, this seminar is perfect for companies and organizations trying to encourage their employees or members to adopt a more active lifestyle.
Smart Cycling (Full) This 9 hour, in-depth class, covers all of the major aspects of bicycling safely on the streets. With 3 hours of classroom discussion, 4 hours of bicycle handling drills, and a group ride, this League of American Bicyclists class is the nationally recognized standard for bicycle safety education. Students will learn basic handling skills as well as advance crash avoidance maneuvers including “Instant Turns”, “The Rock Dodge”, and “Instant Stop”. Smart Cycling is a graded course and is a prerequisite for becoming a League Cycling Instructor.
Smart Cycling (Redux) A shortened version of the full Smart Cycling class, this program is focused on the novice rider. Centering on basic riding principles and simple handling skills, this class teaches new riders how to start and stop effectively, scan for hazards, and safely communicate their intentions while riding on the road. With a 1 ½ hour classroom session and a 2-3 hour on bike skills session, this class is great for the interested but concerned cyclist who wants to take the next step to becoming a regular cyclist.
Winter Cycling Basics Ever wondered about those cyclists who ride year-round? Thought you might want to be one of them? This 1 ½ hour classroom-based program will tell you how. With discussion on equipment, maintenance, clothing, and the unique challenges New York winters create for cyclists, you will learn how to get out and stay cycling whether it’s 80 degrees or 8.
Youth Programs
Walk Safe, Bike Safe Using traffic safety terms and concepts, this program of physical games and races is designed for children in grades 3 - 5. The curriculum contains nine 20-minute modules and can be done indoors or out. NYBC can demonstrate the program, or provide train-the-trainer services. No bicycles are required for this program.
Bicycle Skills Clinics NYBC can offer information and advice on how to plan and hold a bike skills clinic - also known as a ‘bike rodeo’ - to groups seeking an on-bike community or school event for children in grades K - 4.
Afterschool Bike Clubs NYBC can assist in the development and operation of afterschool programs for children in grades 4 - 8. These programs require acquiring bicycles and a commitment from a school or afterschool service provider.
Summer Bike Camps Teaming with municipal recreation programs or other youth camps, NYBC can develop a program using components of Walk Safe, Bike Safe, and our other offerings to include a bike safety element in existing camp programs.
