The New York cycling community lost a true icon in 2020 with the passing of Lou Rossi, a pivotal figure in the development of the state's bike infrastructure and a founding member of the New York Bicycling Coalition. His legacy continues to shape the way New Yorkers experience cycling today.
The extensive network of bike routes, trails, and paths across New York State didn't just happen by chance. In the 1990s, the Highway Trust Fund was opened up for bicycle and pedestrian needs. Rossi played a key role in unlocking this funding, which became the catalyst for the creation of the state's bike route system. As a result of his vision and tireless efforts, New York now boasts 21 signed Bike Routes, connecting urban, suburban, and rural areas across the state. His contributions laid the groundwork for safer, more accessible cycling for all.
In addition to his work on the bike route system, Rossi was one of the founding members of the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC). NYBC continues to honor his legacy by advocating for bicycle-friendly policies and infrastructure, educating cyclists, pedestrians and drivers about how to be safer togeher, and buidlling a strong cycing community in New York.

To commemorate Lou Rossi’s invaluable contributions, in May 2022 the site where three of New York’s longest bike routes intersect, near the Hudson River in Albany, was named “Rossi Junction.” Located just off Quay Street, this area features a plaque that not only honors Rossi’s dedication but also highlights the importance of this junction for local and touring cyclists. The Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA) has also placed a CDPHP Cycle! bikeshare station and a bike rack at Rossi Junction, providing cyclists with an ideal spot to rest and take in the scenic views of the Albany waterfront.
“Civil servants are the quiet heart of government administration; their work is rarely recognized,” said Rich Brustman, a member of the Lou Rossi Memorial Committee. “Lou Rossi was one of the best. Few in the broader cycling community are aware of his contributions, but all of us owe him immense gratitude for the cycling infrastructure we benefit from today.”
